Is your closet overflowing, yet you still feel like you have “nothing to wear”?

We’ve all been there. A wardrobe bursting with clothes, but every morning feels like a frantic search for an outfit. The truth is, a cluttered closet can leave you feeling overwhelmed and disconnected from your personal style.

Here’s a guide to conquering the chaos and creating a wardrobe that works for you. Get ready to transform your closet into a stress-free zone filled with clothes that flatter you and make you feel confident!

What to declutter from your wardrobe.

  • Things that you wouldn’t buy if you were out shopping today. This suggests that they no longer fit your current personal style, so why let them take up space?
  • Anything that doesn’t make you feel good when you wear it. Need I say more?
  • Items you haven’t worn in over a year, because you’re unlikely to now after all that time.
  • Sentimental items that you don’t actually use – or at least put them in storage so they’re not clogging up your usable space.
  • Clothes that don’t fit your body, as they’re probably just making you feel bad. Most people never go back to the clothes they’re keeping ‘just in case’ – they simply buy more.

How to organise your wardrobe.

  • Categorise – group similar items together

Keep jeans, trousers, dresses, tops, etc all together. You can go a step further and group them within those categories by season, occasion, etc – whatever suits your lifestyle. You will be able to see what you have more easily, making getting dressed easier and hopefully stop you overbuying if you can see you already own lots of pairs of jeans but no casual dresses, for example.

  • Colour Co-ordinate – sort your clothes by colour

As with categorising, colour co-ordinating your clothes will help you find exactly what you need. I recommend organising from darkest on the left to brightest on the right if hanging. Fold and roll everything in your drawers, rather than stacking, and put those into colour order too.

  • Storage – for clothes and accessories

Look at what’s not currently working for you, and find a storage solution. For example, your gym wear might be jumbled up with everything else. Get some nice baskets, and fold it all in there together. Get drawer dividers for accessories, hooks for your scarves, or a bigger jewellery box – whatever it is that works for you.

Tips for a maintaining your newly edited wardrobe

  • Keep a list of items you need as you notice them, while editing and going forward – so when you’re shopping you can stay focussed on not buying more things you’ll need to declutter in the future.
  • Find a great seamstress for affordable alterations. This isn’t as expensive as you think, and it can save lots of items from the bin – or even to get the perfect fit when you buy new.
  • Buying lots of fast fashion is a false economy because you’re always buying more. It’s more economical to save up for one great item, than buying lots of ‘okay’ versions of what you’d really like.
  • Having more clothes won’t make you better dressed, so don’t be scared of being minimal. It’s far more important to have the right basics, and learn different ways to style what you own.

By following these steps, you’re well on your way to a streamlined, stylish wardrobe that reflects your personal taste. Remember, a wardrobe edit isn’t just about decluttering; it’s about rediscovering your style and creating outfits you love.
